Evers directs millions for climate change initiatives in budget, putting focus on green energy in Wisconsin
Gov. Tony Evers is hoping to fight back against the effects of climate change on Wisconsin through millions of dollars for initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote clean energy and helping communities prepare for extreme weather events.
Evers included in his proposed budget initiatives that would put Wisconsin in a position to fight climate change, from bringing more clean energy online to providing aid to communities struck by floods.
In his February budget address, Evers promised that addressing climate change wouldn't mean abandoning state history or traditions, but it would mean instituting initiatives that mitigate climate change while protecting the environment and providing jobs.
"We’re ready for bold and urgent solutions that will stop treating these goals as mutually exclusive — we can and will do both," he said.
Among other initiatives, Evers proposed establishing an Office of Environmental Justice, tasked with collaborating across state agencies and engaging with environmental justice advocates, communities of color, Native nations and low-income communities to design climate policies that reduce emissions and pollutants and address the issues they cause.
